Disease Pattern of Patients with Hypocholesterolemia

Abstract
Several studies had demonstrated an association between low serum cholesterol level and many chronic diseases. We studied the incidence and the disease pattern of the patients wit hypocholesterolemia among 16,439 records of total serum
cholesterol
tests
performed in Seoul National University Hospital during March, 1993. We defined the hypocholesterolemia as two groups; the mild, serum total cholesterol level below 160mg/dL and the severe one, serum total cholesterol level below 130mg/dL.
The incidence of hypocholesterolemia was 34.4% according to serum total cholesterol concentration below 130mg/dL and higher in Men(37.1%0 than in women(30.8%). Hypocholesterolemia was more frequent in younger patients.
The common disease group associated with severe hypocholesterolemia were stomach cancer, hypatobiliary cancer, chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis in in-patients and chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic renal
failure in out-patients in order.
The common disease group associated with mild hypocholesterolemia were hepatobiliary cancer, diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis in in-patients and chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, essenital hypertension, diabetes
mellitus
in out-patients in order.
